Fried Dumplings |
One of my favorite things to make for breakfast is fried dumplings or “Johnny cakes”
They taste like biscuits that u would bake in the oven except it’s fried.
When it is fresh and hot, fried dumplings can be very crispy on the outside and slightly soft in the middle.
It can be eaten with anything, eggs and bacon or ham, by itself and with some tea or coffee. But the “staple meal” is fried dumplings with Ackee and salt fish (sautéed fruit made with onions and codfish). Or mackerel (salt mackerel fish made with onions and tomatoes).
2 cups of flour
1/2 cup of flour (extra)
1 teaspoons of salt
3 teaspoons of baking powder
1/2 cup of butter
3/4 cup of cold milk
1 cup of vegetable oil for frying
- Cut in the butter until the mixture forms marble-sized dough balls.
- Add the milk 1 teaspoon at a time, just enough to bring the dough together with a firm consistency. At this time you can use the extra 1/2 of flour, adding it a teaspoon at a time incase the dough is too sticky.
- Heat oil in a heavy bottomed frying pot over medium-low heat until hot.
- Break off pieces and form the dough into slightly flattened biscuits; about 2 inches across. With a knife make a small cut at the top for ventilation.
- Fry the dumplings, in the hot oil until they become golden (about 6- 8 minutes).
- Remove the fried dumplings and place on paper towels to absorb the extra vegetable oil, let it rest for about 1- 2 minutes.
- Makes about 8 dumplings.
*You will know your dumpling is cooked on the inside when you tap
them with a spoon, they should sound a little hollow.
- 2 cups of flour
- 1/2 cup of flour (extra)
- 1 teaspoons of salt
- 3 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1/2 cup of butter
- 3/4 cup of cold milk
- 1 cup of vegetable oil for frying
- Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt together into a large mixing bowl.
- Cut in the butter until the mixture forms marble-sized dough balls.
- Add the milk 1 teaspoon at a time, just enough to bring the dough together with a firm consistency. At this time you can use the extra 1/2 of flour, adding it a teaspoon at a time in case the dough is too sticky.

I just found your site & I like. I live with my Dad now so every Saturday I wake up to the smells of fried dumplings, ackee, salt fist etc. anyway i am trying to cut out white flour & make a healthier fried dumpling. we tried to use wheat flour but it didn’t come out the same. maybe wheat flour mixed with some other flour?
